Happy new year! It is going to be a busy one for me, preparing for a new book and solo show in early Autumn. First though, I am taking part in The Courtauld Institute of Art's East Wing X: Material Matters show. This opens from the 21th January at the Institute in Somerset House in London - but being a working college it is only open to the public on the last Saturday of each month. If you want to catch the show though, it runs until June 2013, which should give you plenty of opportunity. I have a mix of older and newer work in the show, including the image above, taken near Somerset house at the end of last year. You can also see work by War Boutique, Laura Keeble, Gabriel Dawe, Paula Rego, Damien Hirst, Simon Edmonson and over 30 other artists. My work is downstairs in the cafe, so if you get there early you can probably grab a fry-up too. Find more info here.

I have also produced a book cover for Dimitri Verhulst's book The Misfortunates. It is the first commissioned book cover that I have done and the book is great - it reads like a Belgian version of Shameless, but with more heart. The installation wasn't left on the street like I usually would as I had to shoot a few versions of the cover, but fear not - I am in Antwerp in May, where these little alcoholics will be abandoned to their fates in their homeland. First up is The Big City, a show opening in Ludwigsburg, Germany on 23rd October at Kunstverein Ludwigsburg. The solo show, my first in Germany, will feature a combination of past work and installations as well as some new work shot on the streets of Berlin, Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg.

The image above was another street installation from last year's Fame Festival in Italy. This one had a miniature speaker and mp3 player hidden inside the cigarette box, playing sounds of coughing. We moved in to a busier area where Angelo (founder of Fame Festival) and I filmed reactions to the installation as people passed by. We would have liked to have shot more, but it was right before a big festival at the church (right behind where we placed the installation) and they kept ringing the church bells. And then the brass band started up. I think that is why every parent tries to shoo their child away - "Come on, get to church!"

I got back from Fame Festival in Southern Italy last week, after spending a few days making installations around the city. I made six in all, including a few that used miniature speakers and mp3 players to add sound. The one above had a speaker hidden in the drain that played sounds of screaming kids and splashing - check out the video below. I will be posting more soon, including a video showing the reactions of Grottaglie's residents to one of the sound installations. I will also be releasing a mini print from the festival in a week or so. In the mean time, check out more work from the festival here - as usual a bunch of great artists including Swoon, Blu and Boris Hoppek. The Fame Festival show opens it's doors on the 25th September.

The last installation, School Trip, was placed on the visitor's scale model of the hall and grounds - the graffiti is still there too, English Heritage haven't buffed it yet :)

A new book that I am featured in, Beyond The Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art by Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie, is available now. It really is a brilliant book which not only weighs a tonnes but also has a tonne of photos and interviews with loads of amazing people from artists such as Jose Parla, Swoon, Judith Supine, and Blu, to websites like Wooster Collective, magazines such as Juxtapoz, as well as galleries, auction houses, web forums and art festivals. I am very proud to have been featured and if i could recommend one book about the tricky-to-pin-down street/urban art 'scene', this would be it.

Belsay Hall, Newcastle

The above image is one of 12 that are part of a new show that opens Saturday 1st May at Belsay Hall, Northumberland, UK. The show is titled Extraordinary Measures and features work by Ron Mueck, Tessa Farmer, Mat Collishaw and many others - all scattered around the gardens and buildings of Belsay, an English Heritage property.
My installations were placed around Belsay last summer and photographed for the show - visitors can now track down all the images around the grounds, placed where the installations once were. This is my first work outside of an urban area and takes on the theme of tourism and the joys of the day trip - so expect to find images of dodgy ice cream vans, alternative 'donkey' rides, toilet queues, depressing picnics, bored school kids and gift shop dramas. The show runs until 26th September 2010.

A bit of an update on upcoming shows...

Tonight, Thursday 4th March, sees the opening of the Skullduggerous group show in aid of the Bhopal Medical Appeal. The show is held at The Pure Evil Gallery in Leonard Street, London and is open until the 13th March. I have a new installation in the show, titled 'Chicken Tikka Disasta'... Other contributors include Swoon, Pure Evil and The Krah amongst many others - you can see some work from the show here. Check it out if you can - it is for a great cause.

Last summer I installed a number of installations around the grounds of the English Heritage house Belsay Hall, just outside of Newcastle. The photography of these will be part of the show Extraordinary Measures, which opens at Belsay on May 1st 2010, along with work by artists such at Ron Mueck, Matt Collishaw and Tessa Farmer. I've just got back from Grottaglie in Italy where i was working on some installations and shots
for Fame Festival, such as the one above which i think is probably the biggest outdoor thing that i have done (big being relative, of course). For the last three months, urban artists from around the world have been coming to Grottaglie to produce street and gallery work for a show that opens on 19th September, and to eat great home-cooked Italian food supplied by the organiser's mum. Another shot of one of my Tunnel 228 installations. This one is crammed in a dark corner away from the main 'action'. All the installations feature shift workers or night workers of one sort or another; the people who keep things running in a city behind the scenes, in reference to the workers in the film Metropolis who slave away below ground to keep the city running for those above...

Sorry to those who couldn't get tickets - they sold out very quickly but the show might be restaged in the Autumn.

I've been working on some installations for a new art/theatre show that opens this week. The show is called Tunnel 228 and is being organised jointly by The Old Vic theater and Punch Drunk, an alternative theatre company. What makes the show so exciting is that is set in old disused tunnels under Waterloo station in London that are normally not open to the public. The show uses Fritz Lang's classic film Metropolis as a springboard and is half an art show, with works by Antony Micallef, Mark Jenkins, Polly Morgan and Xenz amongst many others, and half a performance. I have hidden miniature installations around the space, lit with tiny lights - you will have to explore to find them. I have finally got my sweaty little hands on the first copy of my book and it looks great! Seeing it for real for the first time was a buzz - I just can't wait to see it in the shops now!

The book is out on the 5th of September but we are having a book launch event on Sunday 31st August in London - The Little People Treasure hunt! I will be placing four installations at various locations around London and it is up to YOU to track them down and find them. The hunt starts at my show at Cosh Gallery on Berwick Street. The first person or team to spot all four installations and get to the finish line at the Truman Brewery Bar on Brick Lane will win a signed print from the show. I don't often check back on the little people once I have placed them on the street. If i do, i usually find that they have long gone. The cash machine installation however was intact the last time I saw it, a few months after it was placed. I checked again recently, but the little man was gone. The cash machine was still there though, although it looks a bit vandalised now. I decided to put a new little person down and see how long she lasts...

I will be taking part in a new show at Andipa gallery in South Kensington, London, starting from 25th June. It is called 'Trespass Alliance: Inside Urban Art' and features 'A selction of paintings, sculptures and installations by influential urban artists' such as Swoon, Faile, D*Face, Nick Georgiou and, er... me. Guess everyone makes mistakes... I've got two new pieces in the show and an installation that is, quite literally, rubbish. I will be posting images from the show in the week and you can check out more info here.

I've started a sister-site to Little People called Inner City Snail, utilising the humble snail shell as a medium for 'art'. No snails were harmed, they just had their homes vandalised.

I am also excited to announce that a Little People book will be out soon, titled 'Little People in the City - The street art of Slinkachu'. It will be a chunky little hardcover packed full of my photographs from this site over the past two years, shots that have appeared in various magazines and exhibitions and also a lot of new unseen stuff. It will be published through Boxtree and will be out on the 5th of September at all good bookstores (and some rubbish ones). Other news; I am featured in a new street art book called 'Street Renegades: New Underground Art' that is out 15th October. It is by Francesca Gavin. I haven't seen it yet but it features loads of great artists such as Cut Up Collective, Dan Witz, Invader, Mark Jenkins and Graffiti Research Lab.

I forgot that my stuff is also featured in a new book published by Die Gestalten Verlag called 'Tactile: High Touch Visuals'. It isn't a street art book as such as it concentrates on artsists and designers implementing their ideas spatially, but it does feature work by Mark Jenkins, TRUTH and others such as friendswithyou. I got it in the post yesterday and it is great!

The next update will be from the Nuart Festival in a couple of weeks. The festival runs from 6th September to 4th November in Stavanger, Norway and aims to be a celebration of contemporary urban art and street culture. Alongside a group of other artists (most of them a lot better than me, such as Dface, Arofish, Blek le Rat, Dolk, Eine, Wordtomother and a load of others) I will be working on an installation in Rogaland Kunstmuseum and also doing stuff on the streets too. I'll post the photos here, and links to other work that has gone on. It should be a blast!
And news for anyone who has emailed me asking if I will be reissuing my first prints 'Dreams Of Packing It All In' and 'Dealer'... well, I won't be reissuing them but I have got back one print of each from a friend who was going to put them up in his gallery which he unfortunately had to close recently. I am thinking of putting them up on ebay with a percentage of the money made going to Amnesty International. This little guy was placed in an tranquil little park by the Museum of London that is overrun by office workers having lunch on week days but deserted at the weekend. The picture was taken by a pond full of foot-long goldfish. Any closer to the centre of London and I am sure these would have been nicked long ago.

Slightly different post today. I was asked by Greg Stekelman, aka TheManWhoFellAsleep, to be part of his virtual 'book tour', to promote his book A Year in the Life of TheManWhoFellAsleep. Basically it is like a normal book tour, but undertaken by a lazy man who can't be bothered to travel to godforsaken places like Ottakars in High Wycombe; It jumps from one of Greg's favorite sites to another each day. For those of you who don't know, one of Greg's 'hobbies' is eavesdropping on the tube and recording snippets of conversation like a public transport anthropologist (these appear weekly in London's Time Out).I could chose what i wanted to do for the tour, so i decided to illustrate Greg doing just that and name the installation after one of the overheard lines from his book. Anyway, i wouldn't have bothered if the book had been crap, but it is great so check it out (and Greg's site) if you get a chance!
